State of Fibre: new Market Forecasts 2020-2026 revealed

  • New forecasts anticipate 202 million homes passed with FTTH/B by 2026 for EU27+1 compared to 88.1 million in 2019
  • FTTH/B take-up rate is expected to reach 73,3% in 2026 compared to 43,3% in 2019
  •  Germany, UK and Italy are likely to experience the biggest growth rates for homes passed by 2026
  •   A new digital divide for teleworking performance appeared

Today at the FTTH virtual Conference 2020, the latest figures of the FTT Forecasts for 2020 and 2026 prepared by IDATE with the FTTH Council Europe’s Market Intelligence Committee were released alongside a flash update of the 2020 FTTH Market Panorama. These numbers were reviewed after the COVID-19 initial wave during 2020.

• It demonstrates relation between percentage of spare capacity in the original FTTH deployment and future cost of 5G fibre rollout.

• Cost of FTT5G  when built on top of an FTTH network with limited or no spare capacity is 2 to 3.5 times more expensive than with sufficient spare capacity

3 December 2020. Today the FTTH Council revealed the results of its second study aimed at quantifying the potential cost savings which could be made by building converged 5G-fibre networks. It demonstrates that deploying FTTH today with sufficient spare capacity will result in significant savings tomorrow for the roll out of 5G networks.

New Study on misleading advertising for fibre networks - the FTTH Council Europe calls on European Policy Makers to take action

2 December 2020 - the FTTH Council Europe says it is time to act on misleading advertising after publishing a report titled “Identifying European Best Practice in Fibre Advertising”. The report, prepared by WiK, finds that European consumers are confused about the terms used to market broadband access technologies, and find it difficult to identify which networks provide the best performance. Consumers often think they have fibre access when in fact they do not.

•            Study shows consumers are confused about marketing and performance of broadband access technologies

•            Country reports show misleading fibre advertisement can be tackled successfully

•            Expertise of Telecom National Regulatory Authorities is key in the assessment

•            A ‘fibre-ready’ label should be introduced for new buildings and major renovations.

Brussels, 10 September - In connection with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the FTTH Council Europe will reschedule the FTTH Conference in Messe Berlin from 1-3 December 2020 to 21-23 September 2021.  In place of the physical conference in December, the FTTH Council Europe will hold a new ‘virtual’ FTTH Conference on 2-3 December 2020. Registration for the 2020 virtual Conference will kick off in late September. All the relevant information about this event will be available on the FTTH Conference website www.ftthconference.eu.

The FTTH Council Europe’s goal is to deliver an innovative virtual fibre summit that represents the most relevant elements of the industry value chain and ensures that the FTTH Conference 2020 is a memorable and rewarding experience for each participant. The Council also looks forward to reconvening physically in September 2021 in Berlin when the public health situation allows.

The European Commission has recently presented an ambitious recovery plan for the EU economy also focusing on green and digital transformations. The past few months have shown us that connectivity supported by robust and reliable digital infrastructures plays and will continue to play a crucial role in supporting the evolution of society and build a more resilient and sustainable economy.

New Fibre Market Panorama 2020 data presented by FTTH Council Europe reveal:

 • Number of homes passed by fibre (FTTH/B) reaches nearly 172 million homes in EU39;

 • France, Italy and Spain have the biggest increase in the number of homes passed; 

• FTTH/B Coverage in Europe confirms a positive trend to nearly half of total homes;

• 15% growth in the number of fibre subscribers;

• Iceland leads the European FTTH/B league table

Brussels, 23 April 2020 – Today the FTTH Council Europe revealed the 2020 Market Panorama and the latest figures outlining fibre deployment trends in Europe prepared by IDATE.
